Nine trainees join Monjasa at dynamic industry moment

At a moment where oil and shipping is more on the global agenda than ever, Monjasa welcomes nine fresh trainees as part of the Monjasa Oil & Shipping Trainee (MOST) programme.

Geopolitics, energy security and shifting trade flows are currently reshaping the oil and shipping industries we used to know. For newcomers, this is a moment to contribute early, commit personally and help shape how the sector evolves through volatile moments.

This year, the MOST programme includes locations across Singapore, Denmark, Panama, USA, UAE – and for the first time, Japan.

Joint onboarding in Denmark

Before the official enrolment at the Danish Shipping Education in Copenhagen, all nine trainees gathered for offsite onboarding activities in Denmark.

The purpose of the weekend was simple: getting to know one another and building friendships across countries, cultures and offices. Through a mix of team challenges, personal reflections and plenty of smile & joy, the trainees shared their first experiences and created memories that mark the beginning of their two-year journey together.

Enrolment in the Danish Shipping Education

MOST is a global two-year programme that offers broad knowledge about the shipping industry through the enrolment in the Danish Shipping Education and hands-on experience in how Monjasa fuels global trade.

Candidates accepted into the MOST programme also become part of two global rotations across Monjasa offices in Dubai, Denmark, Panama, Singapore, China, Cyprus, Greece and USA. This provides everyone with a unique understanding of different business contexts and cultures and gradually develops and prepares the candidates for a life in global shipping.

Overall, a total of 51 Monjasa Oil & Shipping Trainees have graduated the programme, which has been running since 2018.

Monjasa explores LNG bunkering in the UAE

Global top 10 marine fuels supplier, Monjasa, introduces the UAE’s first dedicated LNG Bunker Vessel (LBV), Green Zeebrugge (5,000 cubic metres), as a response to an increasing alternative fuels demand.

Monjasa’s move into LNG bunkering comes at a time where recent DNV data shows that there are now 1,262 LNG-fuelled vessels of which 613 are trading with a further 649 on order – compared to just 62 LNG-fuelled vessels in 2015.

Deploying the Green Zeebrugge is the first important step in introducing LNG as a new marine fuel option in the UAE.

Monjasa chartered the Green Zeebrugge in Amsterdam in November, and she is now enroute UAE with estimated arrival in Dubai before the New Year.

Looking ahead, continued close collaboration with our local maritime partners is crucial in further exploring new supply chains and positioning the UAE as a leading shipping hub in alternative fuels too.”

Monjasa started its maritime operations in the Middle East in 2005 and became the first marine fuels supplier to deliver biofuels in the UAE in 2022.

Developing adequate LNG bunkering infrastructure

To establish a viable local LNG bunkering option, port authorities, energy companies and shipowners are currently working together with Monjasa to finalise the development of adequate LNG bunkering infrastructure.

Through this extended collaboration, Monjasa expects to offer a comprehensive fuel mix, including Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), Marine Gas Oil (MGO), High-Sulphur Fuel Oil (HSFO), biofuels and LNG at UAE ports going forward.

Green Zeebrugge is expected to undergo safety and quality inspections by the local authorities before the New Year and supply Monjasa’s first ever LNG in January 2025.

Facts about LNG

LNG is a colourless and non-toxic natural gas that has been reduced to a liquid state through a process of cooling to around -162° Celsius / -260° Fahrenheit for shipping and storage. The volume of natural gas in its liquid state is about 600 times smaller than its volume in its gaseous state.

Looking at GHG emissions, LNG produces 40% less CO2 than coal and 20% less than oil, which makes it the cleanest of the fossil fuels and thereby an accessible option for shipowners to comply with the increasing shipping regulations, Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the annual operational carbon intensity indicator (CII).

Attracting Gen Z: Monjasa hires 13 new trainees

Today, global oil and shipping group Monjasa reveals additional ownership of the two tankers, Monjasa Rover (17,200 DWT) and Monjasa Hunter (7,858 DWT). The latter joins as a unique fleet addition targeting length-restricted offshore oil and gas vessels in West Africa, including FPSOs.
