Smile Train – Changing the world one smile at a time

In 2018, Monjasa entered a partnership with the international children’s charity, Smile Train, to support their cause in creating smiles for children with cleft lip and palate in Panama.

Smile Train empowers local medical professionals with training, funding, and resources to provide 100%-free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children globally. Every year, one in 700 babies are born with a cleft lip or palate globally. Clefts are the leading birth difference in many developing countries, and it is estimated more than 200,000 babies are born with a cleft every year.

For the partnership, Monjasa will support 100 cleft surgeries planned for 2019 and 2020 to support Smile Train’s local programs in Panama. Monjasa employees will also be participating in employee engagement activities to help raise funds for Smile Train’s programs.

Smile Train in more detail

By using the “teach a man to fish” model focusing on training local medical professionals to provide cleft treatments to children in their own communities, Smile Train is able to then empower those medical professionals to train others, creating a long-term sustainable system.

As a result of this efficiency and with the support of donors and partners around the world, Smile Train has transformed the lives of more than one million children by giving them the power of a smile.

Giving back to local communities

With the value Smile & Joy as an important part of both Monjasa’s workplace and how we do business, we feel that this partnership with Smile Train goes perfectly hand-in-hand with Monjasa.

In addition, as we grow our business around the world, we want to give back to the local communities in which our offices are placed. Like our support of FANT’s work in West Africa, our office Panama is supporting this cause to help children and their families in the local community in and around Panama City.
