Our history

From 2 to 600 people in 15 years. This is our company history in brief.

Our journey in the maritime industry began in 2002 in a small office set-up in Kolding, Denmark. Equipped with two PCs and two second-hand mobile phones company founders Jan Jacobsen and Anders Østergaard set the course for Monjasa on the international bunkering market.

Soon, the young company founders obtain the first important bank credit and see Monjasa’s very first international bunkering operation take place in Dubai. This true entrepreneurial approach, an outspoken ambition to build on strong personal relations and plenty of hard work laid the foundation for the coming years’ rapid growth.

First bunker tanker and growing international operations

In 2005, Monjasa acquires the first small but fully owned supply tanker in South Africa named ‘Monjasa Pioneer’, and the company moves to a new office location in the city of Fredericia, Denmark. During these years, Monjasa opens up the doors to an international expansion and offices in Singapore and Dubai are established.

The bunkering operations now experience rapid growth with markets in West Africa and the Arabian Gulf leading the way.

In 2008, Monjasa eyes a new maritime market opportunity. As industry pioneer C-bed Floating Hotels is established with the purpose of adding value to offshore wind farm operators during the construction phase. By offering on-site staff accommodation on high quality floating hotels, C-bed instantly gains success.

Truly global

Covering growing activities across several maritime sectors, Monjasa now decides to construct new headquarter facilities in Fredericia. The inauguration in spring 2011 marks a company milestone and provides a solid platform for future development. In addition, a third international office opens in Stamford, USA the same year and Monjasa is now globally present across all major time zones.

In 2012, Monjasa A/S received Ernst & Young’s 'Entrepreneur of the Year Award' in Denmark.

In 2014, Monjasa receives its first quality, environment, and working environment ISO certifications. And in 2016, The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) awarded Monjasa DMCC 'Best Maritime Company 2016', highlighting Monjasa's commitment to compliance and risk management.

To extend cooperation with business partners and offer new opportunities to clients and employees, Monjasa also establishes office locations in Copenhagen (2013), Panama City (2015), and in Limassol, Cyprus (2017).

Today, the total workforce on land and at sea counts more than 600 skilled bunker traders and maritime specialists, and the global fleet counts 25 ships.
